Navy Aviation Structural Mechanic (AM) Practice Test

The two types of drill presses are typically categorized based on their physical setup and use—bench mounted and floor-mounted.

Bench-mounted drill presses are designed to be affixed to a workbench and are generally smaller, making them suitable for light to moderate drilling tasks. They provide stability and precision while being space-efficient for smaller workshops or home use.

Floor-mounted drill presses, on the other hand, are larger and heavier, intended for more substantial drilling operations. They are typically used in professional settings such as machine shops, where they can accommodate larger workpieces and handle more rigorous drilling tasks. The design allows for greater stability and accommodates various drilling techniques that require a larger, more consistent base.

This categorization reflects the practical considerations in workshop environments, making it easier for users to select the appropriate tool based on their operations and available space.
